Ruby is one of four gemstones, along with sapphire, diamond and emerald. Like sapphire, ruby is a variety of corundum. This gemstone owes its beautiful deep red color to the chromium it contains. Ruby’s red color can also range from deep red to pink and orange. Like diamonds and other colored gemstones, ruby is a very expensive stone. Its price depends on a number of factors, which we invite you to discover.
How do you define the price of a ruby?
The price of a ruby varies according to the clarity and size of the gemstone. Its overall quality also plays a decisive role. In fact, ruby pricing is based on the 4 C’s rule (color, clarity, cut, carat), which also applies to diamonds.
Ruby color
Ruby is known as a red stone. Its color, however, varies from red to dark red and can significantly increase the price of your stone, depending on its intensity. Pigeon’s blood red is one of the most popular colors. This color is neither too light nor too dark. Too dark a hue can dull the brilliance and transparency of the gemstone. In some cases, when the ruby color is too light, the gem may be considered a pink sapphire. Pigeon’s blood red rubies only come from Myanmar (formerly Burma).
Clarity
The clarity of a ruby obviously plays a very important role in its price. As with many gems, ruby clarity or purity is very often good. Some stones, however, may have flaws such as wilting or cracking. When too many imperfections obscure the mineral’s luminescence, the value of the stone is diminished. The price of a high-clarity ruby can exceed that of a diamond. Inclusions in rubies are not necessarily a disadvantage for their appraisal. Some impurities even form a kind of star effect (asterism). These inclusions are visible when the crystal is cut as a cabochon.
Ruby size
The shape of the crystal determines the most appropriate size for a ruby. Rubies can be cut in many different ways, but the most common sizes are oval, emerald, cushion and cabochon. You’ll also find round, marquise, pear-shaped and heart-shaped rubies… Rough rubies are very expensive. Stone cutters try as far as possible to keep the weight down during the cutting process. Other factors, such as the appearance of various colors in different directions of the crystal, can affect the quality of the cut. This phenomenon is called pleochroism.
Carat
The carat of the stone is equivalent to the weight of the gem: a metric carat is worth 200 mg, so a 5-carat ruby has a mass of 1 g. Rubies of excellent quality are very rare above 8 cts. The largest specimen mined in 1961 weighed 3421 cts, but was cut to size. Another example is the famous star ruby called Rosser Reeves, which weighs 138.72 cts.
Ruby prices are evolving exponentially. As with other gemstones, however, weight in cts is not the most decisive factor. A ruby with a deep red color, optimum clarity, good cut quality and lower ct weight will be more valuable. Its price will be higher, for example, than a ruby with a high carat weight that is lower for the other Cs.
Rubies are more precious than diamonds
With a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, ruby is a very resistant stone. The richest deposits yielding fine rubies are located in Mogok. Tanzania also produces rubies of fine color and large size. Thailand, Sri Lanka and Mozambique also produce rubies of great rarity. Associated with passion and fire since antiquity, rubies have always fascinated the world. This gem often takes second place to diamonds. In India, this red stone is considered the most precious of all stones. The ruby was therefore nicknamed Ratnaraj, meaning “king of precious stones”.
In the Old Testament, the ruby is mentioned as the most precious of the twelve stones given to man by God. In Burmese mythology, warriors put a few ruby crystals under their skins to make them invincible.
Ruby is the most precious of all colored stones, including sapphires and colored diamonds. When ruby is in its purest form, its price can be higher than that of a diamond. The value of the stone can be determined and certified by an expert in gemology.
